How to Care for a Bone Stag Handle Knife
Bone stag handles require light mineral oil conditioning every 3-6 months and should be kept dry to prevent cracking, fading, or the natural material drying out over time.
Cleaning
Clean a Bone Stag handle with a soft, dry cloth after each use. For stubborn residue, use a barely damp cloth with mild soap, then dry the handle immediately and completely. Never submerge a Bone Stag handle in water or allow moisture to sit on the surface — natural bone is porous and can absorb liquid, which leads to swelling, cracking, or discoloration.
Avoid harsh solvents, chemical cleaners, or abrasive pads. The hand-flamed honey and amber tones that give Bone Stag its character can be dulled or stripped by aggressive cleaning. Gentle, dry wiping is almost always sufficient for routine maintenance.
Conditioning
Condition the handle with a light coat of food-grade mineral oil every 3 to 6 months. Apply a small amount of oil to a soft cloth and rub it into the bone surface, allowing it to absorb for a few minutes before wiping away any excess. This keeps the natural material supple and prevents the drying and cracking that bone handles can develop in low-humidity environments.
Do not over-oil. A thin film is all that is needed — excess oil can leave a sticky residue and attract dust. Mineral oil is preferred because it is stable, odorless, and will not go rancid the way natural food oils can. Conditioning is especially important in winter or in dry climates where indoor heating lowers humidity significantly.
Storage
Store Bone Stag handle knives in a dry, climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes. A felt-lined display case or a protective sheath prevents the handle from contacting other metal objects, which can scratch or chip the textured bone surface.
For long-term storage in humid climates, consider placing silica gel packets in the storage case to absorb ambient moisture. Avoid storing knives in damp basements, hot vehicles, or areas with significant temperature swings — natural bone handles expand and contract with moisture and temperature changes, and repeated cycling can eventually cause hairline cracks.
What to avoid
Avoid prolonged exposure to water, high humidity, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures. Do not put a Bone Stag handle in a dishwasher, ultrasonic cleaner, or any chemical bath. Do not use the knife as a pry tool or subject the handle to impact — the textured, bark-like surface is beautiful but can chip if struck against hard objects.
Avoid leaving a Bone Stag knife in a hot car or in direct sun for extended periods. UV exposure can fade the hand-flamed amber tones, and heat can dry out the bone more quickly than normal use. With simple, occasional care, a Bone Stag handle will develop rich character and last for generations.
